Dear Parents and Guardians,
Beginning the week of February 18th, our 3rd grade students will start testing for the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP), while the 4th and 5th grade students will begin their testing on March 4th. The CSAP assessment not only will provide information about how well students are learning to read, write, and compute, but it will also provide information on the improvement our school has made since last year’s assessments.
Third grade students will be assessed on February 20th and 21st in Reading and March 11, 12, 18, and 19 in Writing and Math. Fourth graders are taking the Reading, Writing, and Math assessments from March 4th – 20th. Fifth grade students take Reading, Writing, Math, and Science CSAPs from March 4th – 20th. The testing timeline is extremely tight since spring break falls right after this testing window. It is very helpful to have your student in class and on time every day during the testing period. The students will only be testing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
We are asking parents to help students prepare to do their best work by making sure they get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast each day. Be sure that your child comes to school on time and is well-rested. Please encourage your child to do his/her very best work. Also, please avoid any unnecessary absences including appointments during the testing times. Statistics show that students score higher when they take the test with their classmates. The assessment results will be released by the state in late spring for third grade Reading, and mid-summer for the rest of the tests.
Typically, this time of year, we experience a high number of student absences. The flu and other illnesses (strep throat, cough/cold, etc.) have been on the increase recently. It can be frustrating when your child has caught something, gets better, and returns only to get sick again. If your child is running a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, has the flu, or a severe cough, please keep them home for rest. This will help prevent the continued increase. We are hoping the weather will warm up and help to eliminate some of the risks.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jim Palmer
Principal

**EVERY WEDNESDAY IS EARLY RELEASE DAY – STUDENTS ARE DISMISSED AT 2:15PM MORNING KINDERGARTEN IS DISMISSED AT 11:00AM**

SKYVIEW’S SCHOOL HOURS 2007-2008
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 8:45am-3:30pm ~ Wednesday Early Release: 2:15pm
Kindergarten Hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: Morning ~ 8:45am-11:45am, Afternoon ~ 12:30-3:30pm
Wednesday Early Release: Morning ~ 8:45-11:00am, Afternoon ~ 12:00-2:15pm

MORNING START TIME:
Our first bell rings at 8:43am and the tardy bell rings at 8:45am. Formal instruction begins at 8:45am. You are welcome to drop off your student to line up outside their classroom door starting at 8:35am to ensure that they are not counted tardy. Having students arrive at school 5 to 10 minutes late is embarrassing for the student and disrupts learning. Thank you for your support in this matter.

VISITOR POLICY:
All visitors must report to the office to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass upon entering the building. This is for the safety and protection of all staff and students. Your visitor’s pass must be worn at all times during your visit. Clarification: Anyone who is not a Skyview student or staff member is considered a visitor. This does include parents, guardians, and family members. Thank you for your support with this very important policy.

ATTENDANCE:
Please remember to call the attendance line when your child is sick or will be tardy or absent at 720-972-5638. Notifying the teacher is fine, but is also necessary to call the attendance line. Also, it is very helpful for your student to eat a balanced breakfast before attending school. This helps them to learn and stay healthy.

**Please be advised that after 6 absences and/or tardies, you will be notified in writing by your child’s teacher. After 10 absences/tardies, you will receive a formal letter reiterating our policies. Following the 15th absence/tardy, a letter from the office will be sent requesting a meeting with our administrators.

PHONE CALLS:
Please make sure your students are aware of where they are supposed to go and who they are supposed to meet after school every day before they come to school in the morning. If an important matter arises, and you need to reach your child during school hours, please contact their teacher directly (extensions were provided at Open House). Teachers will be checking messages daily. Please limit these phone calls to emergencies only. We sincerely appreciate your attention to this matter.

MEETINGS WITH PRINCIPALS:
Please try to avoid “stopping by” to speak with an administrator. If you have a concern that you have already covered with your student’s teacher, and you need additional help from one of our principals, please call the front office at 720-972-5620 for an appointment. Scheduling an appointment ensures that you will have our administrators’ full attention for the amount of time that you need to address your situation or issue. Thank you.

PLAYGROUND:
This is to remind you that children, who are NOT students at Skyview, are prohibited from playing on the playground from 8:30am – 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. This includes siblings, with their parents, who are waiting to pick up or drop off their students.
SCHOOL CLOSURES:
Snowy weather is just around the corner. If you are wondering if Skyview is closed on a snowy day, please tune in to any local newscast, and watch the screen for Adams 12 school district. If you see Adams 12 listed as a school closure, Skyview is CLOSED. You may also contact the school district main number at 720-972-4000 and press #7, or visit our district web page at adams12.org for school closures. Since Skyview’s main office is open and phones are answered from 8am-4pm, you may utilize these 3 alternative methods to find out if Skyview is open in inclement weather.

Spanish-speaking TV & Radio Stations: KNRV LaBuena Onde 1150 AM, Sluper Estrella KJMN 92.1 FM, KMXA 1090 AM, Univisión Channel 50 - 777

PARKING LOT ASSISTANCE:
If you ever have a question, concern, or report regarding Skyview’s parking lot, please feel free to contact Joe Dougherty with the Thornton Police Department at 720-977-5284, or email him at joe.dougherty@cityofthornton.net. He will be happy to assist you.

PETS:
Please do NOT bring your pets on the school grounds (please refer to your handbook). This policy is in place to protect our students from injury and harmful situations, as we have many children who are fearful, and may have animal allergies.

PARENT CALENDAR:
Due to consistent calendar additions and newly scheduled events throughout the school year, we send an updated parent calendar home in your child’s backpack every 2-3 weeks. You will notice that it will have the current month on one side, and the following month on the other, for your convenience. Please refer to this calendar to keep up with current events at Skyview.
